Europe basically borrowed our culture, regurgitated it back to us when we got rid of the Ottomans after 4 centuries of occupation and we've been trying to catch up ever since.

Meanwhile our last imperial enterprise (conquering the Roman Empire culturally from within) ended in 1453. Our last Empire was gone even before Columbus sailed for "India". We've been colonized ever since.
