The Biden presidency looks like a slow motion train wreck

And someone needs to pull the break

Biden apparently falling asleep during COP26

You must have realised it by now. Biden is in free fall. It should be clear as day to everyone by now, even to people like me who are living outside of the US and are mostly relying on news articles and opinion pieces to get a picture of American politics.

It is telling and tragic that according to the latest NBC poll only 28 percent of Americans give him high marks for uniting the country.

But that seemed to be his number one priority, to the dismay of many Democratic voters who wanted a more aggressive approach. Biden called for unity and healing when the Electoral College confirmed his victory. He called for unity and healing in his inauguration speech. He called for unity on the 20th anniversary of 9/11. He called for unity on his UN address in order to deal with the pandemic and climate change. He calls for unity in the COP26 now.

And, yes, when dealing with these two global crises unity is of paramount importance. We need to get everyone on board in this effort to save, well, everyone.

But in the US? Not so much. You can’t have unity in the face of an attempted coup in the supposed capital of the free world. You can’t have unity when your political opponent is using every dirty trick in the book to subvert you.

It’d be like Caesar calling for unity while he was surrounded by men, some former friends, armed with daggers, going for the kill.

The Democrats seem to be lacking unity even in their own ranks right now. Senators Manchin and Sinema are acting every bit like Republicans inside the Democratic Party, throwing a spanner at everything they can. Manchin, in particular, looks hellbent on sabotaging every green initiative, even going so far as to stall the Build Back Better bill, after seeming to initially agree to a compromise.

I refuse to accept that I’m the only one who sees what they’re doing. They’re just playing for time.

And the media in the US call these two “centrists”. If things weren’t as serious as they are right now I’d laugh. But that’s just typical of the traditional American political viewpoint, which is firmly to the right compared to the rest of the world. It doesn’t concern us really. What does concern the rest of the world is that Biden’s administration has been effectively blocked from doing anything other than not… being Trump. It’s simply not enough.

Manchin’s antics and McAuliffe’s campaign strategy have now cost Virginia. It’s going to go downhill from here, unless something changes drastically, and soon. And I fear that President Biden does not seem to be up to the task. How can voters be convinced to rally for him, when he calls for “unity” with the party that is actively trying to stop them from voting? When it’s ruthlessly attacking women’s rights? When that same party is unable to shake Trump off and denounce him, as it should have done if it cared at all for democracy and, well, sanity?

It’s not going to happen.

You know what is going to happen? The Democrats will lose the midterms next year, and with it their only chance of doing anything impactful. And the way for a Republican victory in 2024 will then be wide open. At that point, all we will be able to do is watch in horror as disaster slowly unfolds.

Here’s what will happen next: Trump (or perhaps DeSantis) will again repeal every environmental piece of legislation they can get their hands on. China, India and Russia will of course see this as an excuse to reverse their commitments to curb emissions and this will be the domino effect that will lead to the total collapse of human civilization as we know it.

Sorry if this sounds overly dramatic, but such are the times in which we find ourselves. Scratch that, I’m not sorry how it sounds. It needs to be said. This is quite possibly the most crucial decade in the entirety of human history, and we have the wrong captain at the helm. Joe Biden seems like a decent man. He’s the likable old neighbour with whom you exchange greetings and wishes for the holidays. He’s the pastor who will offer some much needed kind words at a funeral. But what he’s not, is someone you can follow. Someone who can take decisive action at the time when the world needs it the most.

There is no use beating around the bush. Biden needs to cite health issues and resign.

And he needs to do it now, while there’s still time to stop the train.
