It's funny you should mention Star Wars, as the original theatrical run of The Empire Strikes Back, where some assholes leaving the cinemas spoiled the big reveal to the ones going in was quite likely the time when the idea of the spoiler as a bad thing was solidified. I fail to see how this was good for anyone.
