I'm not really claiming that Fortnite is the Metaverse, but I'm saying that your examples aren't even close because they lack the "meta" aspect. It's just not there. People have been building virtual worlds for decades and, in fact, WoW is probably one of the most successful ones. But their connection to the real world is always indirect. I'm not aware of any other game where players gathered to watch an actual pop star perform or a movie trailer being presented or the director of a multi-billion dollar film franchise make an appearance to talk about their upcoming movie. Yes, it's marketing, but it's meta. And you can be sure that Zuckerberg's Metaverse will be an advanced advertising/marketing tool, exactly like Facebook.
