I have to strongly disagree with that statement. If that wasn't the case, then religion and fake news alike wouldn't exist. Of course the birth of religion was something unavoidable given that primitive people needed explanations for inexplicable (to them) natural phenomena, including, above all, death itself. But what happened after science was established and became accessible to all people (whether they liked it or not)? What happened after most of the mysteries that so boggled the mind of our ancestors were explained?

Nothing much.

People aren't as religious as they used to be, it's true, but religion hasn't gone away and, in fact, many people today turn the trove of instant information that is the Internet into a source for misinformation and conspiracy theories. People would rather believe that there is a gigantic, global (lol) conspiracy to hide the fact that the Earth is flat, rather than go into the trouble of figuring out why the math doesn't work, and that this is something that Eratosthenes discovered almost 2300 years ago. Who can bother with general relativity, the curvature of the Earth, tidal activity or even the day/night cycle when a mysterious cabal going back to the dawn of time can explain away all that? People don't care to understand any of it.

Politics works exactly like that. People would rather have someone point a finger at a convenient scapegoat for their woes rather than attempt to dig at the causes of their predicament and demand the powers-that-be to address these causes.

If people didn't want simplistic answers we wouldn't have human sacrifices, pogroms, wars and religious zealotry. There wouldn't be any fascism or science denial.

It’s time to ponder the reality of our situation and the situation of our reality.
