I found it deliciously subversive, a sort of wink by Scorsese to his own self for turning a real-life tragedy into a Hollywood drama, recognizing in a sense the irony of white men making the story of murder and exploitation against the Osage by white men into a "spectacle", even though Scorsese really does quite the opposite. I think it was a bold move for a director in his 80s, not something I expected him to do and I also found it touching.
